Here at Shannon Orthodontics, we strive to provide the best dental care for you and your smile. If you need the ortho care of braces to improve your speaking and chewing abilities, Dr. Chris Shannon and his associates are ready to assist you. When coming in for a cosmetic fix through the use of braces, our staff will be happy to help you with your specifications, but we want to let you know of some of the potential risks.

As an adult, your teeth have already settled into place as well as hardened, and the root has become embedded in the bone. For any adjustments, there may need to be further steps taken than if you were younger as a child (children’s teeth are still growing and shifting, so they can be repaired and moved easier). This may include extracting a tooth, or replacing a tooth to create a stable base for teeth being adjusted.

One thing your dentist will watch for is TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder), a type of pain in the jaw joint and muscles controlling the jaw’s motions. Another thing they will have to keep a close eye on is infections, root damage, and your bite placement. Damage to the root may result in root resorption where the bone absorbs the root.
